M etabolites isolated from the soybean pathogen Colletotrichum truncatum w ere identified as mesoand d -( —)-butane-2,3-diol and the previously u n rep o rted com pound, colletruncoic acid m ethyl ester, to which structure 1 is assigned m ainly on 'H and 13C M R evidence. T he com pound has a skeleton unpreceden ted for a fungal polyketide. T he previously unknow n 2-hydroxym ethylhexa-2,4-dienol was also isolated.
